Often times they're more in touch with theif fields than Full Professors in the same institution, just by virtue of the fact that they're recent grad students. Grad school is an amazing experience, and these folks usually have so much new info in their heads... they can be fantastic to learn from. We have two in my department right now (soon to add a third), and I love having them around myself, as I learn from them every time I interact with them. They bring lots of energy and new life to the Department. About the only *concern* you might have is their inexperience with teaching, and particularly in assessing your performance. In most (not all... ) universities, we try to ensure that visiting profs work to build their syllabi and tests with strong reliance on the other profs in the dept. That way, they can keep their expectations in line with the other profs. When schools don't do this... well... then things can get harry. After all, professors weren't your typical college students when they were in school, so occasionally they can bring with them unusually high expectations.
