Inquisition in the New World As Spain expanded into the Americas, so did the Inquisition, established in Mexico in 1570. In 1574, Lutherans were burned at the stake there, and the Inquisition came to Peru, where Protestants were likewise tortured and burned alive. In 1580 Spain conquered Portugal and began rounding up and slaughtering Jews that had fled Spain. Philip II also renewed hostilities against the Moors, who revolted and found themselves either killed or sold into slavery. Philip II died in 1598 and his son, Philip III, dealt with the Muslim uprising by banishing them. From 1609 to 1615, 150, 000 Muslims who had converted to Catholicism were forced out of Spain. By the mid-1600s the Inquisition and Catholic dominance had become such an oppressive fact of daily life in Spanish territories that Protestants avoided those places altogether. End of the Spanish Inquisition In 1808, Napoleon conquered Spain and ordered the Inquisition there to be abolished. After Napoleon's defeat in 1814, Ferdinand VII worked to reinstate the Inquisition but was ultimately prevented by the French government, which helped Ferdinand overcome a fierce rebellion.

Xanadu or Xana-don't The problems related to the 15-year long "birthing" of the 93-acre New Jersey American Dream site across the highway from MetLife Stadium have been epic. First christened "Xanadu" in 2004, the project endured two failed attempts to bring it to life, prior to Triple Five Group's 2011 acquisition. The new owners planned to complete the project in time for the Super Bowl at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in 2014; they missed the mark, by a lot. Created by nature, visited by international travellers and administered by successive colonial powers through centuries, the Port of Kochi (erstwhile Cochin) has a very long and chequered history of growth and evolution. From being the Queen of the Arabian Sea to becoming the maritime gateway of India, it has been years of evolution for the port, the origin of which goes back to 1341 AD. During that year, a catastrophe struck the famous Muziris (modern day Kodungalloor) port in the form of a great flood, which silted up the harbour, making it impossible for vessels to berth. This marked the beginning of the story of the Kochi Port. Prior to that, a small river flowed by Cochin with an opening into the sea. The waves of the flood that silted up Muziris, amplified the opening in Cochin and converted the harbour into one of the finest and safest ports in India. According to historians, the name Cochin must have been derived from the word Kocchazhi, which roughly translates as 'small harbour, ' to distinguishing it from Cranganore/Muziris/Kodungalloor, which was situated 22 miles north and was once a busy maritime hub.
